Residential pottery retreats at Aura are structured getaways for individuals who are at the beginner or intermediate level of ceramics. The retreats range from a fun weekend getaway to longer stays from one week to twelve weeks. The retreats includes studio and material use, instruction, accommodation and meals.

Weekend Retreat

Weekend Retreat

The weekend retreat is ideal for those seeking a relaxing escape from work while also learning the basics of hand-building and wheel throwing. The two-day program is equally divided between these two techniques, and prior experience is not necessary. This course is specifically designed for beginners, making it the perfect opportunity to start exploring this art form.

The techniques we will cover in this course include:

  • Introduction to the vocabulary used in clay
  • Introduction to hand-building techniques
  • Introduction to working with the potter's wheel

One Week Retreat

This retreat will introduce you to the fundamental techniques of building in clay with the best tools a potter can have - their hands. The week is divided equally between hand building and wheel-throwing. No prior knowledge required, this course is perfect for beginners.

Techniques we will cover-
  • Introduction to stoneware clay, wedging, ceramic vocabulary
  • Hand building techniques- Coil and Slab
  • Intro to pottery wheel- Centering, Coning and Pulling Cylinder shapes

2 Week Retreat

These two weeks are divided equally between hand building and wheel-throwing. Get introduced to all three techniques of hand building and build a project using each technique. You will get a week to practice on the pottery wheel and understand the basics thoroughly. No prior knowledge required, this course is perfect for beginners.

  • Introduction to stoneware clay, wedging, ceramic vocabulary
  • Hand building techniques- Pinch, Coil, Slab
  • Intro to wheel- Centering, Coning, Pulling, Cutting
  • Pulling and trimming cylinder shapes

4 Week Retreat

This retreat will cover all the basic techniques and focus on specific tips and troubleshooting techniques to improve your skills in hand building as well as on the wheel. Refine your work and continue to build upon your construction techniques to form functional or sculptural ceramic shapes. This course will include an introduction to glaze class to understand basic glazing and finishing techniques.

Techniques we will cover-

  • All techniques mentioned in the 2 weeks course
  • Basic surface decoration, tools and techniques
  • Hand build shapes like mugs/tumblers, handles, bowls
  • Create basic wheel forms- cylinders and bowls.
  • Introduction to glaze

8 Week Retreat

The ideal program length to give yourself a good grounding in pottery is eight weeks. Get introduced to advanced techniques in both hand building and wheel throwing. You will design your own concepts, both functional and conceptual and learn how to best execute them.

Techniques we will cover-

  • All techniques mentioned in the 4 weeks course
  • Throwing larger amounts of clay, use advanced tools, textures
  • Altering shapes- bottles, bowls, vases, narrow/wider shapes, trimming foot
  • Glaze application and techniques, underglaze application

12 Week Retreat

This retreat offers an in-depth exploration and understanding of ceramics for students to discover their own individual language in clay. The skills included in this course cover all the fundamental techniques in ceramic that extend into advanced techniques such as execution of conceptual design strategies and construction with mixed techniques to form complex forms (sculpture or functional).

  • All techniques mentioned in the 8 weeks course
  • Build your own design, sectional break down of design, mix technique work
  • Altering shapes- Mugs, bowls, bottles, vases, lids/jars,
  • Glaze making & application
  • Loading, unloading pieces, basics to firing a gas kiln

  • 18% GST is applicable.
  • The retreat is for people 18 years and above only.
  • The pricing below is applicable to per person.
  • Firing fee is applicable at an additional cost of Rs. 100 per 100 grams
  • The program includes studio and material use, instruction, accommodation, and meals.
